A City and Mountain Engagement Session | Denver Wedding Photographer

A woman looks back toward her fiance in a meadow in Boulder, Colorado engagement session.

Where do you take your engagement photos if one of you loves the city and the other loves the mountains? You take photos in both places! That’s just what these two decided to do for their autumnal session.

When I talked to J on the phone, she presented this vivid vision of what the two of them were hoping for our of their Colorado engagement session: she loved the urban setting of Denver and wanted to spend some time at the bar they met for their first date. He wanted the iconic landscapes of the Foothills to represent his more outdoorsy lifestyle. I cooked up a plan to combine the two, laying out a few different options for timing, locations, etc. We landed on an early Sunday visit to the pub to play pool and enjoy a beer followed a few hours later by a jaunt in the Foothills as the sun set.

I adore an engagement shoot that feels so quintessentially the couple. Take me to a beautiful Colorado backdrop any day of course, but don’t be afraid to make your engagement photos feel wholly unique to you and who you are as couple.

Unique Engagement Session Ideas

So it begs the question, what sorts of things could you do during your engagement shoot to make it your own? Brainstorm! What do you like to do together? What’s a way in which you like to bond as a couple? How do you have fun? Here are some ideas:

  • Do you play sports together? Embrace the vibe and dress up for some fun time on the court! Play some tennis, basketball, pickleball, you name it.

  • Do you bond over coffee or tea? Let’s go to your favorite coffee shop and find a little corner to cozy up with warm drinks. Maybe play a board game or cards or read together!

  • Like to play games? Go to an arcade! This is such a fun, dynamic idea and makes for great photos, as you can see here.

  • Not big nature people? Prefer the city? Let’s wander around your neighborhood and capture photos in your favorite urban corners, like this Chicago shoot.

  • Are you big on biking? Let’s grab some vintage bicycles and head to a big, grassy park with a picnic. Lots of room for movement and vibes.

  • Is there a bar you two frequent together often? Let’s go! Just like the photos below or this fun dive bar engagement session.

The ideas really are limitless!
